Artist Statement

When beginning a piece, I have a specific idea or vision about the work. Within this is room open for exploration of new techniques or materials. Both spontaneous and deliberate actions are crucial when forming my sculptures; I allow myself to move freely in whatever direction a material lends itself to. An arrived knowledge of the properties of each material (literally, getting to know my fellow materials) helps solidify and form each individual piece. And yet, because of a constant vision (even if an obscure one), my ideas are what constantly drive me, perhaps in the background of my mind. My work thus develops through a relationship between purposeful and subconscious processes. I’ve recently come to terms with the fact that much of my work is the visual representation of my subconscious. I like consciously playing with physicality and visual limits; however, I feel as though this deliberate manipulation displays some unconscious movement. Perhaps the relationship between a material’s delicacy and its visual weight, or the layers of physical, conceptual, and aesthetic presence – perhaps these embody or signify the complexities and seemingly hidden workings of my mind at work. Nevertheless, it is in these physical, conceptual, and aesthetic relationships that I find my artistry’s strength.
